XXIV, appendicibus. Saint Isidore of Seville was a seventh-century Spanish scholar. He served as Bishop (later Archbishop) of Seville from c. 600 until his death in 636 and was responsible for converting the Visigothic kings of Spain to the Roman Catholic faith. His importance today is due to his works in compiling extracts from classical texts that would otherwise have been lost and his knowledge was revered even in his lifetime. He also wrote several theological works, including some that are today regarded as antisemitic. His best known work, the above, his ‘Etymologiae’, an etymological encyclopedia that assembled extracts of many books from classical antiquity that would have otherwise been lost. This work also helped standardize the use of the period (full stop), comma, and colon.
